Origins of this conference

The idea for this symposium, 'The Howling of War', was born at the General Assembly of CRIVA (Cercle de Recherche International Voix Analyse) in June. At this General Assembly, the two CRIVA conferences for 2023-2024 were planned, as well as the monthly seminars. Zorka Domić - our international CRIVA representative for Slavic-speaking countries - proposed the theme "Voice and War", which we have chosen to conclude the year 2023. Another theme has also emerged, which will see the light of day in the spring of 2024: "The Voices of Exile". Zorka got down to work with Gabriel Mart, who had expressed the wish to get closer to our association. And we got together, Zorka Domić, Gabriel Mart and myself (Claire Gillie), to try to combine our ideas about 'voices', 'war' and what could be metaphorised as the invocative impulse when it meets the devastating crash of war. In Russian, two signifiers that bring together 'voice' and 'war' are consonant: вой Войны ... This leads us to the title LES HURLEMENTS DE LA GUERRE. A first elaboration of the basic lines that can (could) support the trajectory of this symposium can be found below under the title "General Inciting Argument of the symposium".

General inciting argument of the symposium

If the voice - driven by the invocatory drive - is as close as possible to the unconscious as Lacan teaches us, and constitutes a founding psychic act of the unconscious, then war - which forms a diabolical couple with the death drive - produces psychic effects that are destructive for both the subject of the social and the subject of the unconscious. Ruptures and fractures unfold in a field mined by hatred, where the Erinyes rage to unfold their vengeful score. Eros and Thanatos sing their dissonant duet, unleashing war neuroses and psychoses in the victims, who oscillate between silence and screaming. With Death at his heels, the psychoanalyst lends his devastated ear to these subjects who "howl for death" in the midst of the cacophony of war. Where "the absolute master, Death", slays the symbolic that tries to raise its head from the ruins.
